PlayStation 5 Pro architect Mark Cerny gave an update on the upcoming enhancement for the console’s machine-learning upscaling technology, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Slated to release next year, the improvement to PSSR will bring the tech to par with AMD’s recently released FSR 4.
PS5 Pro update will bring PSSR on the same level as AMD’s FSR 4
In an interview with Tom’s Guide, Cerny discussed partnering with tech company AMD, Project Amethyst, and the quick results that have come from the collaboration. The two companies have been working together to improve ML tech, and “push the boundaries” of video game graphics. Part of this resulted in FSR 4, which has been lauded as performing at the same level as NVIDIA’s DLSS.
Cerny had previously said Sony would implement tech similar to FSR 4 to the PS5 Pro in an update next year. While it may be assumed that the PS5 Pro iteration of this would be downgraded to work on a home console, Cerny claims it isn’t a “cut-down” version of the tech.
“The algorithm they came up with could be implemented on current-generation hardware,” said Cerny. “So the co-developed algorithm has already been released by AMD as part of FSR 4 on PC. And we’re in the process of implementing it on PS5 and it will release next year on PS5 Pro.”
“It’s not a cut-down [version] of the algorithm,” said Cerny. “It’s the full-fat version of the co-developed super resolution that we’ll be releasing on PS5 Pro.”
The major PS5 Pro PSSR update reportedly leaked earlier this year, potentially giving players a glimpse of what to expect from what was supposedly being dubbed as “PSSR 2.” This includes 4K resolution locked at 120 frames-per-second, 8K at 60 fps, and adding support for more resolutions, including 1440p and 1080p.
