Rematch is a sports video game, specifically football/soccer, developed by an Indie Studio, Sloclap. Sloclap is famous for its previous work on popular games like Sifu and Absolver. As both of these games are straight-up brawlers, which many players critically acclaim, Rematch is a totally different approach for the studio. Despite the Rematch being a different genre game, the team has done a great job in keeping it a fun and fast-paced experience. Unlike other football games, Rematch offers quick online matches in a Rocket League style, but with characters instead of cars. However, it might not have all the great features yet, like Rocket League, but we can see sports game lovers hooking up on Rematch in an instant. This is the review of Rematch, co-published by Kepler Interactive.
Gameplay
Rematch is a third-person football game that allows each player to control one player on the field. Unlike FIFA and other football games, there is no other camera angle to assist during the match. It is literally like playing Rocket League without using wheels. The matches are fast-paced, and all players have to work together to take the lead by scoring goals. Another similarity between Rocket League and the Rematch is that everything is manual. You cannot simply press the “Pass” input to pass the ball to the teammate. You have to aim and place a perfect shot to get the ball to the other player.
Understanding the concept of the game made me realize that Sloclap was certainly not going for a cozy football experience, but instead an intense one that requires full attention from all players. The control scheme in Rematch is quite interesting. Overall, the controls are quite responsive, which allows the player to do quick maneuvers to tackle the opposing players. If you get a grip on the controls, you can lead the ball close to the opposing net without much sweat. However, that is not the case at all times.
You have to look for the opening at your teammates to pass them the ball and make tactical decisions to secure the goal. Both teams have to work together, and that is what makes it more intense. The overall feel of the game is nothing less than the typical 5v5 online competitive game, because it will require you to work with the others or face defeat.
Gameplay features that make Rematch Unique
Although the game gives the Rocket League vibes through and through, its core gameplay features certainly make it unique. The best feature that I think Sloclap put in Rematch is the equal sharing of the roles. Every player in the match will get the chance to be an Attacker, Defender, and a Goalie. Players can change these roles on the go simply by changing their position on the field. If a current goalie walks out of their area, another player can go to their position to take the role. Not only that, but the game system is designed in a way that after every goal, every player on both teams changes their role.
Moreover, since it is a fast-paced game, there is no offside, penalties, free-kicks, or any type of break during the match. Furthermore, all games take place inside a virtual reality field with surrounding walls, so the ball does not go outside. It means there are no corner kicks or throw-ins during the match. All of these rules and features keep the momentum of the players going without any break.
Every match is about six minutes. It does not matter which mode you play. Currently, there are casual and Ranked modes available for 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5, and each one is six minutes long. The team that scores the most goals at the end of the time wins. However, there is a Mercy Rule in the play. If a team takes a lead of 4 goals over the opposing team, the match ends in favor of the team with the higher score. Other than that, there is a practice mode for the players to learn and precise their shots. The practice mode really helps with learning the air and shoot mechanics of the game.
Visuals
Rematch does not offer high-quality visuals or character designs like FIFA, but they are enough to let the players feel that they are controlling a responsive character. The first time a player launches a game, they get to pick and customize their Avatar. Moreover, there are several customizable options and a Battlepass as well to help you give a unique look to the character. However, the additional price of Battlepass might be concerning for a lot of players. Other than that, the visuals of stages, scoring a goal, and the scoreboard feel fresh.
Verdict – Score 8/10
Rematch tends to deliver a fast-paced and tactical match between two teams in an intense way. There are no rules to slow the players or the match down, just complete football action. The air and shoot mechanics of the game let you score unimaginable goals like never before. However, features like co-op couch and offline play are yet to come to Rematch. If it launches with those features, the game could have done a lot better. Despite these features, players who want to feel a fast-paced football action without any delay will love Rematch.
Thank you for reading the review of Rematch. Rematch is now available on PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
