A former Xbox console exclusive game is making an unexpected return in 2025 on modern platforms including PS5. Originally developed by People Can Fly, Painkiller is a first-person shooter series that launched in 2004 to positive reviews. The series spawned a number of entries, only one of which ever made its way to PlayStation.

Former Xbox console exclusive game Painkiller being ‘reimagined’ for PS5

A reimagined Painkiller is being developed by Anshar Studios and published by 3D Realms. The shooter will release on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 9. The standard edition will cost $39.99 and the Deluxe edition will cost $49.99.

Pre-orders are live now on the PS Store. The Deluxe edition includes the following:

Iron Crusade pre-order bonus skin pack

Three post-launch DLC, each including six weapon skins and four character skins

Painkiller will feature co-op play for up to three players and full offline support. Check out a trailer below:

The series made its debut on PlayStation with Painkiller: Hell & Damnation on the PS3 in 2013. The game — which served both as a remake and sequel to the 2004 game — didn’t quite make its mark, with its PS3 version earning a Metacritic score of 40/100.

It remains to be seen how Painkiller’s 2025 return fares.
