We’ve always enjoyed our first person shooters here at Gamezebo. From the old school stylings of Slayers X to the more pumped up action fare of Boltgun, we’ve found many shooters the perfect solution when it comes to some good old stress relief.
And when it comes to satisfying gunplay we think Deadzone: Rogue – which entered Early Access on Steam earlier this month – might be one of the best we’ve played in recent years.
The plot isn’t too important, but sees you awaken on the spaceship ISS-X with no memory of who you are and what you’re doing there.
There’s not much time for memory recall though, as a horde of rogue machines are making a beeline for your location. So basically you have to blast them away using a range of weaponry.
So the plot is admittedly bare bones, but fortunately the action isn’t – even in this early access build.
The movement and pacing reminded us a little of NuDoom, but fortunately a touch slower. This gives you a greater chance to employ tactics when wiping out the waves of enemies you’ll face.
Because as you’d expect in a roguelike shooter, one of the main draws is constantly upgrading and tweaking your weaponry to suit your needs. There’s a range of element types you can use as well, although some did seem underpowered compared to others.
In terms of the guns themselves, the majority are a lot of fun to use. They are never overly flashy, but once maxed out it’s almost unfair how powerful some are against the majority of foes.
As for content, it’s understandably a little threadbare at the moment. There are two zones to play through, with the third not ready as we wrote this preview.
There are some challenge missions to add some meat to the bones, but at the moment it definitely feels like the game is in its test phase. Which it is, obviously.
We maxed out a lot of the skill trees without having to touch the nightmare setting. But that may have been a blessing rather than a curse.
What is here is a huge amount of fun though. The gunplay is satisfying, there’s a great range of weapons and enemies, and the action is fast but not too frantic.
You’ll want to keep an eye on this game as it heads into its full launch. You can find it on Steam here.
