Standing desks probably seemed like quite an eccentric idea until a couple of decades ago, when medical science and furniture technology teamed up to convince us all that sitting is a bonafide health hazard.
Since then, standing desks have become relatively commonplace. You can even get them in Ikea. People are creative, and it turns out there’s a surprising number of ways to make a desktop higher. Of those, the Flexispot E7 is easily our favourite.
Ease of construction
Even in its flat-packed form, the Flexispot E7 smacks of quality. For example, not only are the cables cinched together with cable ties but these are covered by a special branded velcro cable ties to make them look nicer.
73.3. The sitting height of champions.
Flexispot has included a roll of this material for managing the cables under the desk, which, along with the cable tray and robust magnetic cover for the wires on the underside of the desk, means you can pretty much rule out seeing a cable ever again.
The instructions are clearly written, the screws and other accessories are clearly packaged and labelled, and the Flexispot E7 even comes with a special branded tool containing two allen keys and a screwdriver. And something even better: complete practicality.
Just as I was scrutinising this device and anticipating its possible limitations, I discovered the additional allen key that Flexispot had included for fiddlier tasks. Assembling the Flexispot E7 is a bit like the flatpack equivalent of fine dining, the instructions and accessories performing the role of a telepathic waiter.
There are a couple of minor stumbling blocks. It’s a heavy object, so you’ll need a friend with you for flipping it over at the very least, and you’ll need to make a handful of screw holes yourself, but otherwise the whole process is very straightforward.
Appearance
If you feel strongly about preserving the mid-century aesthetic of your office, the Flexispot E7 probably isn’t the desk for you. In appearance it’s strictly functional, with clean lines, rounded corners, and minimal visual clutter.
You can choose from a variety of different desktop materials and colors, as well as desktop widths, but that’s about it in terms of visual flair.
For a fairly stark piece of furniture, however, it does a fantastic job dealing with the spectacle that blights every office scene. As we mentioned in the intro, the Flexispot E7 gives you a generously proportioned – yet discreet – basket for keeping cables neatly tucked away.
It turns out, this is a big deal. The one thing that has always put us off the idea of owning a desk comprising nothing but stalk-like supports and a surface is the sheer volume of visible cables we’d need to tolerate.
With the Flexispot E7, this isn’t a problem at all.
Function
There’s not a lot you can say about the functionality of a desk, other than that it holds things up. The Flexispot E7 doesn’t even have drawers to write about.
But it does have a very neat trick up its sleeve. With the press of a button, you can raise or lower the Flexispot E7 to any height you like, making it ideal for sitting, sitting slightly higher, sitting even higher than that, and of course standing (at any height).
If the only standing desk you’ve used before was one of those ones that you have to crank up and down with a handle, the Flexispot E7 will amaze you.
108. The standing height of champions.
The control panel – which you have to screw to the underside of the desk using your own holes – contains buttons for raising and lowering the desktop (obv), but also for up to four different preset heights.
When you press those up and down buttons, the Flexispot E7 springs into life, rising or falling with a gentle but forceful pneumatic hum and an almost menacing sense of power. It’s like ED-209’s more elegant cousin.
We knew the Flexispot E7 is a hefty piece of kit before we unboxed it, and before we even managed to get it into the house. That’s because the burly delivery person needed our help to lift it off the truck.
The Flexispot E7 is a beast. A silent, glossy beast. In one of the promotional videos we watched there’s a clip of a man lying on one while it casually lifts him up. We are too respectful of our belongings to try this, but we have no doubt that Flexispot E7 could elevate us with ease.
Conclusion
We don’t have much negative to say about the Flexispot E7. As a simple electrified standing desk it has modest goals and achieves them with complete success. While it’s certainly more ergonomic than aesthetic, it does a decent job of being both.
If you’re looking for a desk that’s versatile, practical, reasonably elegant, sturdy, and as strong as a cybernetic ox, you simply can’t go wrong with the Flexispot E7.
