HBO and Max announced its video game television series adaptation of The Last of Us is renewed for Season 3. This comes just before Season 2‘s premiere on April 13.

The Last Of Us Season 3 continues Part 2’s story

There isn’t much information regarding The Last of Us Season 3 beyond the series’ renewal. The X (formerly Twitter) post from Max features a brief video with the words “Season 3” in big, bold font, along with The Last of Us title treatment. The post’s caption simply says, “Season 3 is coming.”

The Last of Us Season 1 was originally broadcast on HBO in 2023 and was a hit for the streamer Max. It was lauded for successfully adapting Naughty Dog’s 2013 action-adventure game while adding new interesting aspects to its post-apocalyptic world. It was nominated for numerous awards, including five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and three Golden Globe Award nominations. It also won awards, including eight Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support,” says The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann. “Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions. On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog, our cast, and crew, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity.”

The Last of Us Season 2 will adapt part of 2020’s The Last of Us Part 2. While it is still unknown where this upcoming season will end, it is known that the second game’s adaption will be split into “one or two more season,” according to creator Craig Mazin in an interview with Variety.

“We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of,” says Mazin. “The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us with season three!”

The Last of Us Season 2 was created by Mazin and Druckmann, who also serve as executive producers, writers, and directors. Its returning cast includes Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Its new cast includes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara will guest star.
