There are a couple of ways through which you can get the Metal Detector in Atomfall. The first method is to find it on a dead body in a stream in the Slatten Dale, the first map of the game. The second method is to barter it from Molly Jowett trader who is also in Slatten Dale.
Out of these methods, finding it is the fastest and cheapest method. When you get out of the initial bunker at the start of the game, you need to continue down the main road until you reach an Outlaw camp. As you get close to the camp, you will see a path leading up to the hill. Go up to the hill and follow along the path to reach a stream.
Here, you will see a dead body on a rock in the middle of the stream. Go to the dead body and pick up the Metal Detector next to it. Upon picking it up, you will get a tutorial on using the Metal Detector. The exact location of the dead body is at the 29.1 E, 73.9 N coordinates.
For the second method, you will have to go to Molly Jowett. If you speak to the farmer Nat Buckshaw in a house near the starting bunker, he will mark Molly’s location on the map. Go to Molly and she will offer the Metal Detector for bartering. However, getting the Metal Detector from her will cost you several items.
How to Use the Metal Detector in Atomfall
After acquiring the Metal Detector, you can use it to find hidden caches across the three maps. Whenever you come across a place where there is a hidden cache, a small pop-up will appear on the bottom left corner of the screen. Press the respective button to equip the Metal Detector. Hold the Aim button to start searching.
You need to follow the needle to find the hidden caches quickly. If the needle goes to the right side, it means you are going in the right direction. When the needle reaches the right side, all five red lights on the metal detector will blink rapidly. Press the respective key to the “Dig” action to dig out the hidden cache.
