Hawk-eyed PS Store users seem to have figured out a rather interesting pattern of game prices when they go on sale. Using store tracking websites, players have discovered that a number of games go up in price after hitting their lowest sale price, then remain at the increased price point in subsequent PS Store sales.
Do PS Store game sale prices have a life cycle?
This discussion was recently brought up on Reddit, where a player used PSPrices.com to illustrate that certain games randomly go up in price, then remain at that price in virtually all promotions that follow.
I decided to test this myself by checking older titles with a significant history of sales. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, for example, hit its lowest price of $1.99 then rose back up to $3.99, and has remained at that price point since 2023.
Killzone: Shadow Fall’s lowest price was $4.99 and has since been increased to $9.99 in all promotions as of 2021, with the exception of two PS Plus exclusive discounts (note: the game isn’t on sale at the moment). Similarly, Infamous: Second Son’s lowest ever price in a sale was $7.99, which then went up to $9.99 in subsequent promotions and remains there whenever it’s on sale.
I’m sure this isn’t the case for every single game on the PS Store but it’s an interesting pattern to note. Players have several theories as to why this happens, but the one that sticks out the most is the idea that a game is unable to attract new players after a certain point regardless of its price, and those who really want a specific title will make a purchase regardless.
So while these games are heavily discounted from their retail price, their sale price will likely remain the same in every promotion once Sony determines their time’s up.
