Sony recently published its top PS5 downloads of 2024 which saw several live service games make the list. While it has been a controversial direction for the PlayStation makers, it does seem to indicate why the company committed to a live service push. Now, games industry analyst Mat Piscatella shared the best-selling games of 2024 across all platforms, further validating that push.
PlayStation live service game Helldivers 2 is the third best-selling game of 2024
In a Bluesky post, Piscatella shared the 2024 U.S. top 20 games ranked on dollar sales. This covers both physical and full game digital sales from Nintendo eShop, PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox platforms from December 30, 2023 through January 4, 2025. Here is the full list:
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
EA Sports College Football 25
Helldivers 2
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero
NBA 2K25
Madden NFL 25
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
EA Sports FC 25
Elden Ring
EA Sports MVP Bundle
Hogwarts Legacy
Dragon’s Dogma 2
WWE 2K24
MLB: The Show 24
Grand Theft Auto 5
Minecraft
Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
Tekken 8
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
NBA 2K24
Anyone that keeps up with this data throughout the year will know most of the usual suspects are present. Call of Duty, NBA 2K, Grand Theft Auto 5, and EA Sports FC (a.k.a. FIFA) are typically in the top 20 best-selling games every year. However, the inclusion of PlayStation live service game Helldivers 2 is a surprise, all things considered. Despite the failures of Sony’s other live service endeavors, it did start strong with Arrowhead’s sequel.
Overall, this list is filled with games that feature live service elements. Eight of the top nine best-selling games of 2024 include some sort of live service feature. So, although it may not be the direction fans wanted Sony to go with its games, there is evidence as to why the company decided to push games as a service.
