Many PlayStation fans have questioned Sony‘s recent live service push for PS5. The controversial direction seems to be slowing down as games get canceled and studios close due to the company’s very limited success in the genre. However, looking at the top PS5 downloads of 2024, it does make sense why Sony would favor these projects as opposed to single-player experiences.
Top PS5 downloads of 2024 mostly feature multiplayer and live service games
Revealed on the PlayStation Blog, Sony shared the PlayStation Store’s most downloaded games for 2024. There really aren’t any surprises here, but does indicate that players seem to favor multiplayer games that feature live service elements.
Here are the top 20 PS5 downloads of 2024 in U.S. and Canada:
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
EA Sports College Football 25
Helldivers 2
NBA 2K25
Grand Theft Auto 5
EA Sports Madden NFL 25
Black Myth: Wukong
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
EA Sports FC 25
NBA 2K24
Madden NFL 24
MLB The Show 24
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Hogwarts Legacy
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Astro Bot
Sea of Thieves
Out of the top 20 most downloaded PS5 games, there are only five that are strictly single-player. Looking more broadly, about half of these include single-player campaigns. However, games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 or Grand Theft Auto 5 are probably reaching these download numbers due to their popular multiplayer modes. This is doubly true of the sports games on the list, where games leverage live service features in modes like MyTeam in NBA 2K25.
One of the top 3 downloaded PS5 games is Helldivers 2, a PlayStation published live service title. So, while Sony’s live service push doesn’t seem favorable to the players, it isn’t surprising the company is looking for success like this.
