After a surprising launch of Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, Nintendo received both excited and underwhelming responses from the fans and the community. Nintendo’s shares also fell by 7% after the reveal of Nintendo Switch 2. After learning the response of the investors, a journalist from Game File outlet reached out to numerous companies to gain insight on whether they will support Nintendo Switch 2 or not. Moreover, the journalist also contacted Nintendo itself, which revealed that Nintendo Switch 2 will not support or not be fully compatible with all original Nintendo Switch games.
Major Publisher Responses on Nintendo Switch 2
Journalist, Stephen Totilo reached out to numerous big publishers including Microsoft, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Take Two, Capcom, Square and Sega to see if they had anything to share about whether or how they will be supporting the Nintendo Switch 2. Some of the publishers did not reply while some replied with that they have nothing to share. Moreover, Ubisoft did reply with “We’re in love”.
Nintendo Response to Stephen
In addition to asking biggest publishers, Stephen also reached out to Nintendo itself about their next plans. Nintendo refused to give any new information, but did mention the compatibility with the original Nintendo Switch. They did say that the new successor will run both digital and physical games of Nintendo Switch. However, some of the games will not be fully supported on it. The response of Nintendo was as follows.
“Nintendo Switch is played by many consumers, and we decided that the best direction to take would be for consumers to be able to play their already purchased Nintendo Switch software on the successor to Nintendo Switch. As a result of that thinking, Nintendo Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.
We have nothing more to announce on this topic. For more details on Nintendo Switch 2, please tune in for the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 4.2.2025, which will air on April 2, 2025.”
