You’ve probably heard people talking about it. You probably know at least someone who plays it. Counter-Strike is a certified gaming phenomenon that needs little introduction. Still, with a game that has such an established status, it can get a little bit embarrassing if you feel like you’ve missed the boat. So, that’s what this guide is all about.
A primer to help you get started in Counter-Strike 2 without having to admit to anyone you’ve never played before. Sadly, we can’t help you with your aim. That one’s on you.
Counter-Strike 2 is a multiplayer online first person shooter built on the Source 2 Engine, and generally focuses on team-based matches. One side are a group of terrorists trying to get away with some sort of… terrorist-like behaviour. The other side are counter-terrorists trying to foil their plans. Here we’ll look over the game and the these CS launch options
Match Types
There are several different types of match in Counter-Strike 2, and which one you play has a big impact on how things play out. You can’t just run in and start shooting and hope for the best. I mean, you can, but don’t expect it to automatically pay off. Let’s go into the different types.
Competitive
The ‘default’ game mode of CS2, focusing on the Terrorist vs Counter Terrorist battle. Premier and Casual are variations on Competitive. Premier has a system of map selection vetos. Casual is a slightly easier variation on Competitive that allows for larger teams.
Bomb Defusal
This is one of the Competitive objectives, and usually the most popular one. Consider it the median CS 2 experience.
Terrorist team – The terrorist objective is to ensure the detonation of a payload of C4 at a target, by planting the bomb and ensuring that it isn’t defused before the timer runs out. Alternatively, you can take out all the Counter Terrorist team members.
Counter-Terrorist Team – Counter-Terroism objective here is to prevent the bombs going off. You do this by stopping them from getting planted in the first place, diffusing them if they are planted, or by taking out everyone on the terrorist team.
Hostage Rescue
This is the second Competitive objective. It’s a little more complicated, but doable if you understand the etiquette.
Terrorist Team – In this mode, you’ve acquired hostages, and you’re not keen to let them go. You need to prevent the Counter-Terrorists from rescuing any hostages, or take out all the Counter-Terrorists. Don’t shoot the hostages though! This incurs a penalty, and your fellow players will NOT be impressed.
Counter Terrorist Team – The Terrorists have hostages and it’s up to you to try and rescue them. If you manage to reach one, interact with them to pick them up. Reach the safe zone with the hostage still in one piece and that’s a win! That, or take out every Terrorist. You also need to not shoot any hostages, but we hope that would be obvious for a Counter-Terrorism agent.
Wingman
The same as Bomb Defusal, but these matches are 2 vs 2, so everything you do matters.
Deathmatch
Deathmatch is a free for all game mode where you’re not knocked out for a whole round on death. Instead your objective is to try and rack up as many kills as possible. If you’ve played any online shooters, you probably know what to expect.
Arms Race
A deathmatch variation. In Arms Race, you have set weapons, that change for every two kills you score. The objective is to be the player who levels up to the Golden Knife, the top of the weapon food chain. Once they score a kill with the Golden Knife, they win.
Launch types?
When starting out you can consider your launch options – these CS launch options can be varied too. They range from removing the FPS cap (+fps_max 0) to disabling joystick support and receiving a performance boost (-nojoy). It’s worth looking over the number of options and choosing what works best for you.
Controls
Ready to hop in? It’s probably a good idea to know what you’re doing, so we’ve included a quick reference guide to the default keybinds, in case you want to get acquainted with the essentials.
Movement – WASD
Jump – Space
Crouch – CTRL
Walk – Shift
Fire Weapon – LMB
Weapon Function (eg Sights, Silencer) – RMB
Reload – R
Switch Weapon – Mouse Wheel
Drop Weapon – G
Interact – E
Buy Menu – B
Auto Buy – F1
Re-Buy Previous Loadout – F2
Money And The Buy Menu
So you’ve managed to do fairly well in a round and it looks like you’ve received some money for your troubles. What’s it for? For weapons! Between rounds you get Buy Time, and access to the Buy Menu. This allows you to spend money on upgrading your loadout. Be quick though, Buy Time is short and you need to make your purchases before time runs out. There is no money or Buy Menu mechanics in Arms Race mode, because you’re give weapons to use.
