Gaming giant Tencent has announced Light of Motiram for PC, which looks like a blatant rip-off of Sony’s exclusive Horizon series by Guerrilla Games. We’re not talking about a slight resemblance. Light of Motiram genuinely looks like it’s based on assets from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.
Will Tencent’s Horizon rip-off be sued by Sony?
Light of Motiram, a trailer for which you can see below, is developed by Tencent subsidiary Polaris Quest. It’s billed as a “mechanimal-ruled open world” game. Players will fight to survive in a world “overrun by colossal machines” following the collapse of civilization.
The minute Light of Motiram was unveiled, players likened it to the Palworld/Pokemon situation. Palworld, which heavily borrows from Pokemon, has found itself mired in legal controversy as Nintendo has sued its developer Pocketpair for infringement of patent rights.
A number of players have opined that Sony should take Tencent to task considering how blatantly it copies the Horizon series. Others say that suing the company over Light of Motiram is an overreach.
A number of websites have reached out to both Sony and Tencent, neither of which have responded. However, we’ll be surprised if Sony doesn’t take legal action. Not doing so would leave the door open for its other popular franchises to be cloned.
