FromSoftware-inspired games are a dime a dozen. But sometimes, one comes along that is actually worth playing. Red Candle Games’ Nine Sols is available now for PS4 and PS5, and is definitely one Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice fans should check out.
Nine Sols is critically acclaimed
Released earlier this year for PC and now available on PlayStation platforms, Nine Sols is a metroidvania set in a “taopunk” world. Featuring hand-drawn 2D art, its gameplay is inspired by Sekiro, Hollow Knight, and Katana Zero. Check out the trailer below to get a glimpse of its unique setting and gameplay.
“Nine Sols is a lore-rich, hand-drawn 2D action-platformer with Sekiro-inspired, deflection-based combat,” reads its PS Store description. “Embark on a journey of Asian fantasy, explore a land once ruled by an ancient alien race, and follow a vengeful hero on a quest to slay the 9 Sols—the powerful rulers of this forsaken realm.”
When it launched earlier this year for PC, Nine Sols reviewed favorably. Based on 18 reviews, it received an 83 on Metacritic. Even more impressive considering how often gamers like to review bomb, it has an 8.8 user score based on 202 user ratings.
Steam user reviews are a bit more reliable as it is required to own the game to review it on the digital storefront. With over 14,000 reviews, it is sitting at “overwhelmingly positive.” It seems the overall consensus from both critics and gamers is that it’s worth visiting.
Nine Sols is just one of several FromSoftware-inspired games released this year for PS5. Another Crab’s Treasure is another smaller title more directly inspired by the beloved genre. Stellar Blade is another popular game this year with Soulslike elements.
However, the most successful of the bunch is Black Myth: Wukong. Developed by Chinese studio Game Science, the game has sold over 20 million units since its August launch. It is even nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
