Folks struggling with storage space on the PS5 might want to check their Captures settings, especially for trophies and challenges. Automatic screenshots and video clips have been a system feature since launch, but Sony has refined it over the years, requiring players to keep abreast with how Captures are saved to the media gallery.

How to free up storage space by adjusting PS5 Captures settings

On your console, navigate to Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures. Players can adjust both screenshot and video clip formats. HDR screenshots can be turned off, and players can choose between “efficient” and “compatible” file types for video clips. You can also adjust recording resolution, and include/exclude mic and party audio.

Going further down, players can turn off ‘Auto-Record Recent Gameplay’ as well as switch off the setting that allows the PS5 to automatically download video clips and screenshots of streaming gameplay to media gallery.

Then comes trophies. You can either turn off trophy videos and screenshots altogether or choose which trophy grades (Platinum, Gold, etc.) you want to save clips and images of. You can further adjust trophy video duration.

Make sure to check your auto-capture settings for Challenges as well. I recently discovered that my PS5 was saving clips of me completing Astro Bot challenge levels. Players can turn this feature off.

Last but not least, if you’re not interested in participating in Community Game Help, make sure to turn this setting off as well, otherwise it’ll auto-capture videos when certain game objectives are completed.

Since Captures are stored in the PS5’s media gallery, they take up a lot of precious space. Players will be surprised by how much space they save by adjusting these settings.
