Building and expanding your city in a post-apocalyptic world where winter never ends will require you to provide for your population at all costs to keep a balance against all factions. There are numerous enhancements that you will have to develop on the world map, but they won’t be accessible until you unlock the Idea Tree by building a Research Institute.
This guide will help you build a Research Institute and unlock the Idea Tree in Frostpunk 2.
How to Build a Research Institute in Frostpunk 2
The Research Institute is the Housing District building that can be placed in an empty building slot. However, you must first expand a pre-built housing district to build a research institute. To expand or upgrade a housing district, select the district and then select the expand option denoted by four arrows. After that, select the three tiles next to the district to finalize the expansion. Expanding the housing district will cost you the following resources.

50 Prefabs
Once the housing district has been expanded, its output will be increased which is Shelter and gain 1 building slot. Now, you can place the Research Institute inside the housing district. To do so, press the N button to open the Buildings Menu and select the Research Institute under the Housing tab. Building the Research Institute will require the following resources.
400 Workforce
100 Heatstamps
50 Prefabs
Wait for the Research Institute to be built and the Idea Tree will be unlocked.
What is Idea Tree and How to Use it
Once you have unlocked the Idea Tree, you can access it by pressing the R button. It will open a menu with different ideas on top and each idea offers numerous possibilities. Think of it as a Tech Tree because it basically works in the same manner.
There are 6 different tabs of ideas consisting of Heating, Resources, Frostland, City, Society, and Hubs. Each idea tab has several enhancement options which you can unlock by spending certain resources. However, each faction will provide a unique design for every enhancement allowing you to choose one. Each design will have certain advantages and disadvantages, and selecting a design in favor of a faction will strengthen your relationship and trust with them. However, your decision will affect your relationship with other factions.
You will have to balance out the relationships with every faction by favoring each one in different enhancements, otherwise it can easily cause a protest in your city.
