Is there anything more harrowing than a missing cat? Developer and publisher Zombisoft doesn’t seem to think so, as they’ve built an entire game around it.
Rather than a simple puzzler or point and click adventure though, Zombisoft has gone all in, channelling the likes of Wizardry or Might & Magic to bring you a dungeon crawler worthy of the classics.
As the name Labyrinth: The Wizard’s Cat suggests, you have to enter a labyrinthine dungeon in order to help a wizard find his missing cat. Along the way you’ll encounter various challenging enemies, pesky traps, and puzzles that you have to solve to progress.
So it will test your combat ability, reflexes, and intelligence – and you’ll need all three in spades if you want to make it to the end. Fortunately, you aren’t without help though, as you can discover a variety of items, weapons, and equipment that will boost your power to help you survive.
Combat is real-time, and reminiscent of more recent entries in the genre, like Legend of Grimrock. You can attack opponents in melee, or stand back and shoot off a fireball or two. Enemies will fire their own projectiles in return, so you’d best dodge out of the way to avoid taking a hit.
This is an old school experience through-and-through. You don’t even start with a map, though you can fill in your own as you progress. This helps you make it back to previous landmarks, as well as visit locations that you haven’t previously explored.
The visuals even harken back to a bygone era. They’re beautifully pixelated, and wouldn’t have looked out of place in the 90s, when the genre was at its peak.
Enemies are menacing, while remaining somewhat cutesy, and the dungeons feature a variety of different location types to keep it interesting.
If you’d like to check out Labyrinth: The Wizard’s Cat, go ahead and grab it from Steam or iOS right now. It’s a classic old school adventure that will keep you busy for a number of hours. Besides, that cat needs rescuing!
