Runewords were one of the exclusive features in Diablo 2 that allowed players to further enhance their character capabilities by putting on several Runes on a gear piece. Matching various runes in the sockets grants a unique ability, similar to an enchantment system. Well, during yesterday’s Campfire Livestream of Diablo 4, Blizzard revealed that they will be bringing the Runewords back to Diablo 4, but in the Vessel of Hatred expansion.
Similar to the old system that was in Diablo 2, it will allow players to create unique skills by mixing and matching various Runes, but it will not be that complicated nor expansive like in D2 so that more audience can easily understand and enjoy it. Instead of having six slots on a gear piece like in Diablo 2, there will be two to four (maximum) rune slots on a gear piece in Diablo 4, allowing players to equip a maximum of two Runewords at a time.
In an interview with IGN, Brent Gibson talked about the Runesword feature, stating: “The biggest change is that the requirement is sockets. The D2 system is great, but it’s also not super approachable for the larger audience. We wanted to have a really great system that made it easy for you to socket, basically an ‘IF’ statement, then a ‘THEN’ result. So as long as you have two sockets in your gear, you can place two different types of stones. You have the ritual stone, which is the condition, like ‘on potion,’ and then you have the invocation stone which is the power that’s cast, like ‘earthquake.’ So every time I use a potion, cast earthquake.”
Moreover, in the 2.0 PTR blog post from Blizzard, the Devs explained the Runewords system in Diablo 4. There will be two different types of Runes – Ritual and Invocation that players will find as they explore the Sanctuary. Both of these rune types work differently and can be put together to create a Runeword that will have a unique effect of its own.
There will be 45 Runes in total: 17 Runes of Ritual and 28 Runes of Invocation, all of which are of different rarities including Magic, Rare, and Legendary. The higher the rarity the more potent its effect will be.
Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred comes out on October 8, 2024.
