Emio – The Smiling Man is a visual novel point-and-click adventure game set in Japan. The story follows the murder of a junior high school boy leading to an urban legend of a killer called Emio.

This guide will walk you through the prologue and Chapter One of Emio – The Smiling Man.

Prologue: A Face – Walkthrough

Go through the initial dialogues with Utsugi at the Utsugi Detective Agency office and you will be asked for assistance at a crime scene.

Scene of the Crime

Once at the crime scene, follow the steps below to progress.

Police Officer: Ask/Listen two times.

Police Officer: Ask/Listen > Victim.

Police Officer: Asl/Listen > Cause of death.

Police Officer: Ask/Listen > Time of death.

Police Officer: Ask/Listen > Cause of death

Police Officer: Ask/Listen > Observations?

Police Officer: Look/Examine > Victim.

Go through the dialogues and you will be asked to enter your first and last name (Cannot be changed later).

Kuze: Think

Kuze: Look/Examine > Where? > Kuze.

Utsugi & Kamada: Ask/Listen > Victim.

Utsugi & Kamada: Ask/Listen > About Kuze.

Upon selecting all the necessary actions in your initial investigation, the prologue will conclude and the first chapter of the game will initiate.

The first chapter begins at the Utsugi Detective Agency where you will speak with Utsugi about the murder case.

Utsugi: Ask/Listen > The victim.

Utsugi: Open Notebook (see the collective information and then close it by pressing B).

Utsugi: Think two times.

Utsugi: Ask/Listen > About Kuze.

Utsugi: Ask/Listen

Ayumi: Ask/Listen > The Smiling Man.

Ayumi: Ask/Listen > The Smiling Man.

Utsugi: Take > What? > Cell phone.

For the final, you can choose any answer. However, if you choose “I, uh, got lucky and saw…” > Others > Police Officer, a unique dialogue will trigger.

After the review, the investigation for the first chapter wraps up and the second chapter will begin.
