Enhancing the abilities of Nor (the main protagonist) requires you to unlock skills from the various skill trees in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn. Each skill tree offers a set of unique skills respective to certain attacks and builds which might confuse you about which skills to unlock first for the starting hours of the journey.

How to Unlock Skills in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn
Skills are unlocked from the Skills tab in the main menu and each skill is unlocked with Reputation (XP). There are three skill trees under the Skills tab, each focused on its respective element ranging from Range Attacks, Melee Attacks, and Magic.
To unlock a skill, hover over it and hold the interaction key. Moreover, you can also unlearn the unlocked skills to get 75% of the Reputation back of its original cost and use it to unlock a different skill that might be more crucial for your build.
Best Skills to Unlock First in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn
As mentioned above, there are three different skill trees to choose the skills from, we will mention the best early skills for each skill tree below.
Powder (Ranged)
Charged Shot: Shoot a powerful charged-up shot from the primary firearm by holding the R2/RT button. It allows you to eliminate common enemies with one shot from a distance.
Cost: 2,500 Reputation
Destructive Descent: Perform a heavy ground stomp attack by holding the R2/RT button while in the air. The strength of the attack is determined by the height.
Cost: 5,250 Reputation
Extra Shot: The Black Powder Charges increased by 1.
Cost: 5,500 Reputation
Steel (Melee)
Dodge Attack: Allows you to land a follow-up attack after dodging an enemy attack.
Cost: 2,500 Reputation
Charged Attack: Strike a charged-up attack with your melee weapon by holding the R1/RB to deal extensive damage to enemies.
Cost: 4,500 Reputation
Deflection: Allows you to deflect an incoming enemy projectile back at the enemy by pressing L1/LB just before the projectile hits you.
Cost: 3,750 Reputation
Magic
Taunt: It is a passive skill and allows Enki to continuously taunt enemies when you are facing multiple opponents.
Cost: 3,750 Reputation
Shadow Partner: Hitting an enemy at the same time as Enki’s curse attack will deal 25% bonus melee damage.
Cost: 3,750 Reputation
Shadow Strike: Enki automatically attacks and curses an enemy whose attack you dodge at the last moment.
Cost: 11,000 Reputation
As you make further progress into the game and go past the early areas, seek out the next skills according to your build. If you prefer melee and ranged attacks more, then unlock more skills from the Powder and Steel skill trees. Similarly, if you prefer magic build and want Enki to help you in the encounters, unlock more skills from the Magic skill tree
