What do you get when you combine that Australian outback with old-school Resident Evil-style gameplay, and Puppet Combo-esque VHS horror? You get Loggerhead, a wild retro thrillride through a backwoods community descending into chaos.
If you’re a horror buff and you’ve not gotten into Australian horror movies, you’re missing a trick. Movies like Wolf Creek, Cargo, and Lake Mungo make great use of the remote areas of the country.
Nowhere To Run
Now Loggerhead puts you in the shoes of two would-be campers facing the worst scares that Oz has to offer. Daryl and Tracey head to Boggarogga Creek campsite, anticipating a weekend of fun. They do so heedless of the grisly murders that took place at the site a year before.
As you might expect, things quickly take a turn for the terrifying for the two holidaymakers, forced into a fight for their lives as hostile creatures swarm the place from all sides.
The game is a love letter to horror games of the past. It’s closer to the original Silent Hill or Resident Evil than most modern offerings. Think tank controls and combat you want to avoid. That’s a feature, not a bug.
Hope You Like Tank Controls
Old-style horror’s clunky combat made actually staying to fight enemies a much riskier decision. That combined with limited resources means you always need to think hard about when to kill the monsters and when to run away.
You may find the pay ahead peppered with puzzles, where you look for objects, fiddle with fuses. Try to open up the secrets of Boggarogga Creek, before the secrets of Boggarogga Creek open you up instead.
Sound fun? The Loggerhead demo is available now on Steam for free. You can also wishlist the full game so you’ll find out as soon as it’s released.
