Netflix has revealed a new featurette to celebrate the grand re-opening of the famous Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles (right in downtown Hollywood – here on Google Maps). In addition to the Paris Theater in NYC, this is now the second theater that Netflix owns. The Egyptian Theatre is an iconic, historic movie palace that first opened in 1922 and has hosted many big premieres over the decades. From 1998 to 2020, it was owned & run by American Cinematheque. Netflix will now manage programming Monday through Thursday and the American Cinematheque will run it from Friday through Sunday. They’re kicking things off with a series of classic screenings (full list here), as well as announcing that Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi movie Rebel Moon will be screening in 70mm in select cinemas around the world – including at the Egyptian this December. Ever since our first days, FirstShowing has been a purveyor of the theatrical experience. I’ve seen some iconic movies at the Egyptian, including Lawrence of Arabia (which they’re re-showing this fall) and it is indeed a spectacular cinema.
