The PS5 Slim will require players to pair their disc drives online upon setup, according to screenshots of the console’s box making rounds online. The new iteration will go on sale starting early November, replacing the launch model. PS5 Slim’s previously leaked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Spider-Man 2 bundles have already started making their way to retailers.
PS5 Slim’s disc drive pairing requirement alarms the gaming community
According to photos of the back of the PS5 Slim’s box, an internet connection is “required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Some assume that this requirement is for Digital consoles that have the option to add a drive, but the box we’re looking at comes with one, indicating that this might just be a standard requirement going forward.
There is a surprising lack of information about PS5 Slim beyond the recent PS Blog posts so this discovery hasn’t gone down well with players. Many are concerned that this may cause problems for game preservation as well as using third-party disc drives in the future, and considering Sony’s history in both departments, these concerns aren’t misplaced.
However, the wording used here is “upon setup,” which makes us wonder if this is just a one-time requirement. Here’s hoping Sony clears this confusion up soon.
