Tomes of Magic is totally a new mechanic that players will have to learn in Age of Wonders 4 in order to maintain and build their Faction stable and powerful. There is a total of 54 Tomes of Magic of different tiers that players can unlock throughout their gameplay. However, when the players first start their game, they will only have access to the Tier I Tomes that hold normal bonuses and spells.

How to Unlock High Tiers Tomes in Age of Wonders 4
The Tomes of Magic are linked to the Affinities which we have discussed in one of our guides on Age of Wonders 4. There are 6 types of Tomes of Magic and Affinities in the game and when you unlock a Tome, it gives you certain points in that respected affinity along with bonuses to your faction. Each Affinity has 9 Tomes of Magic of different tiers, making a total of 54 Tomes of Magic.
The Tiers of Tomes of Magic are ranged from Tier I – to Tier V. There are 2 (Tier I) Tomes, 2 (Tier II) Tomes, 2 (Tier III) Tomes, 2 (Tier IV) Tomes, and 1 (Tier V) Tome to each affinity through which you can unlock spells and bonuses. As the game starts, you will only be able to select the Tier 1 Tome of any affinity but if you want to get access to a higher tier of that Tome, you will have to do research which will cost Knowledge.
In order to unlock the Higher Tier Tome, you will have to research any 2 Tomes of the Previous Tier. Meaning, to unlock the Tier 2 Tome, you will have to research 2 Tier 1 Tomes of the same affinity. You need to keep doing that until you unlock the Tier 3 Tome. Now, for the Tier 4 and Tier 5 Tome, you will be required to have certain Affinity Points of one type.
Tier 4 Tome requires 6 Affinity Points of the same type and Tier 5 Tome requires 8 Affinity Points of the same type. So, you will have to focus on gaining Knowledge and Researching the spells and bonuses from Tomes to unlock the higher tiers of Tomes.
